InTorres Novas, Portugal, Minister Gusmão, has a dialogue with business leaders about opportunities in Timor-Leste.
Xanana Gusmão participated in a meeting today that brought together business people and local councillors from the region of Torres Novas in Portugal.
In his speech, the Minister recalled the years of Timor-Leste’s development journey since 2002, which he characterized as unique and, considering the lack of experience in governance of the leaders, successful.
He spoke recognizing the affection of the people of Portugal and the role they played in the independence and development of Timor-Leste.
During an address on “Timor-Leste, an Economic Platform in the CPLP” the Minister underscored the potential of Timor as a bridge to the region of South East Asia and the need for the country to create jobs to sustain growth and peace. He noted that studying the examples of municipal development in Portugal, such as Torres Novas, was a helpful way to learn things that could help Timor with its 1.2 million inhabitants.
He also enjoyed re-meeting his friend António Rodrigues, the former president of the city of Torrejano who led the municipality for 20 years. Rodrigues said he remembered Timor when it was in ruins and noted how much it had grown in the last 15 years.
